Instructions for Self-Management
Deep Breathing:
perform through out your day and everyday (in shower, car, in front of TV, etc.)
Self-Massage Techniques:
try to perform on a regular basis. Try doing a short sequence in the shower or bath.
Skin Care:
Do not use harsh soaps. Wash arm or leg daily. Apply a moisturizer before bandages or compression garment. Observe for signs of infection (red, hot, painful, itchy). If noticed see your doctor at once. Do not try to massage it or let it clear on its own.
Exercise:
Try to perform the lymphatic warm-up you were taught before doing exercise, or any type of vigorous activity (including yard work, house cleaning, etc). When performing exercise or increased activity make sure you are wearing your garment or bandages.
Bandaging:
a must to prevent increased swelling and to take away increased swelling. If your arm or leg is achy or uncomfortable or you broke a risk reduction precaution then wrap the extremity. Remember to keep the bandages laundered and in good condition.
Compression garments:
A MUST TO PRVENT INCREASED SWELLING. You should replace garments every 6 months. Consult your therapist or garment fitter for what size you need. As time goes on you may need a different size or style.
Hydration and diet:
Try to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water daily. Try to manage your weight as extra weight gain can make lymphedema more challenging to control.
Self-Measurement of Girth:
Do this using the chart provided at least once a month to monitor how your arm or leg is doing. If you notice the girth is increasing, then first start wrapping more often (daily to see if it will go back down). If it continues to increase, then contact your therapist.
Life-Style:
Make time to take care of yourself: YOU DESERVE IT! Review the risk reduction practices occasionally and follow them. Lymphedema is a life-time management issue for you.
YOU CAN HAVE CONTROL OVER THE SWELLING!
