Types of Lymphedema:
Primary Lymphedema
is caused from an abnormality of the lymphatic system and presents with no obvious cause. It can present at any time during one's life, though it commonly occurs before the age of 35.
Secondary Lymphedema
results from an insult of the lymphatic system. In the US it is most commonly a result of cancer treatment. The insult can be from removal of lymph nodes, radiation therapy, burns, injury, obesity, surgery, knee replacements, infections of the lymphatic system, heart or circulatory problems and injuries or health problems that cause swelling and paralysis.
