Complications

Infection:
Lymphedemaa chronic, abnormal swelling of a part of the body. It is an accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the superficial tissues that most commonly occurs in the arms or legs but can affect any part of the body. produces a protein-rich and stagnant environment that is perfect for infections to grow. Infection compromises the health of the skin and can cause lymphedema to become more severe. The risk of infection greatly increases when lymphedema is not controlled with proper treatment and without adherence to precautions.

Cellulitis
is a common infection associated with lymphedema. It spreads freely, quickly and uncontrollably in the deep tissues and can be life threatening if it is not promptly treated with antibiotic treatment. Symptoms include: Flu-like symptoms, chills and fever, skin discoloration, rash, hot and tender skin to touch, sudden increase in swelling, itching, and pain.

Fungal infections
including athlete's foot and jock itch can also occur if lymphedema goes untreated.
